Honey, also known as the food of Gods, has medicinal
properties, too. It can satisfy your sweet tooth and benefit your health in more ways than one.

Honey is known to be rich in antioxidants and has immunity-boosting properties. A spoonful of this delicious nectar formed in nature can relieve cold and sore throat while nourishing your body with nutrients when consumed
regularly.

Having said that, you need to be mindful about consuming the right kind of honey and in the right way.

At Jiva, we believe in taking Ayurveda to every home. Ours is multi-flora honey, sourced from a variety of flowers in organic environments, which are known to provide the best quality of honey, offering you several health benefits. Read on to know what they are.

Benefits of Eating Honey

Honey benefits in multiple ways. Here are some of them:

1. Rich in Antioxidants

The antioxidants in honey help neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can build up in the cells and cause damage that can contribute to acute and chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, premature ageing, allergies, gum diseases, and inflammation.

2. Boosts Immunity

Honey is a rich source of micronutrients, amino acids, and enzymes that can nourish your body and boost your immune system. It is often considered one of the winter immunity boosters available in nature.

3. Natural Energy Booster

Honey is a good source of carbohydrates, which is the primary fuel for your body to generate energy. A teaspoon of honey can boost your energy levels naturally.

4. Useful in Cold and Cough

It has properties to suppress cough and soothe sore throat and is therefore often recommended to be consumed with warm water or by itself for some respite.

5. May Help in Weight Management

Regular consumption of honey in adequate amounts may help manage weight, however, this hasn’t been scientifically proven. Nonetheless, it is a natural immunity booster and has energy-boosting properties that make it a beneficial substance to add to your diet.

6. Nourishes and Soothes Skin and Hair

Honey generally has soothing and healing properties. It is antibacterial and can gently exfoliate your skin while expediting healing. For the hair, it can moisturize the scalp and hair, restore shine, reduce breakage, and soften it, too.

How to Consume Honey?

Honey is a versatile ingredient, and you can eat it by itself or with other foods, such as the ones stated below:

• In warm water
• In green tea
• With a wide variety of fruits and nuts
• With breakfast oats, pancakes, and waffles
• Drizzled over bread, toast, crackers, etc.
• In salad dressings
• In marinades
• Homemade granola bars

Best Time to Consume Honey

While there is no best time to consume honey, you can eat it in the morning or evening, or in between meals. Generally, one teaspoon of honey a day is enough. We recommend following the dosage instructions given on the jar and seeking guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner or your doctor for more clarity on its consumption.

Who Should Not Consume Honey?

Honey is a healthy addition to your diet when consumed at the right time and in adequate quantity. However, there are exceptions.

1) Those With Bee Allergy

Some might develop allergies towards bee products, in which case, it is best to avoid honey.

2) Newborns and Infants

Traditionally in India, feeding honey to infants has ceremonial importance, but medically, it could be harmful to the baby. Babies under a year could develop a condition called infant botulism because of a type of bacteria, called clostridium, found in honey. This condition can cause muscle weakness in the baby, leading to poor sucking, a weak cry, constipation, and decreased muscle tone or floppiness.

3) Diabetics

While honey can be a good sugar substitute, it may not be ideal for diabetics, especially type 2 diabetics, as it may lead to a spike in blood sugar and quick progress in the condition.

4) Those With Impaired Immune Function

Some experts may advise avoiding honey for those with compromised immune systems. It’s best to consult your doctor if you have an impaired immune function before adding honey to your diet.

Why Should You Eat Honey?

Honey has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It is nutrient-rich and can easily replace sugar in your diet. However, we urge you to consult an expert before consuming any type of honey to rule out allergies and health complications that may arise due to a compromised immune system.
Fake honey contains glucose, syrups, sugar solutions from refined sugar, or corn, cane, or beet syrup, and food colour. At times, it may contain a small amount of real honey. To differentiate between pure and artificial honey, drop a teaspoon of it in a tumbler of water. Fake honey will immediately start dissolving, while pure honey settles down at the bottom of the tumbler.
As stated above, honey may not be ideal for diabetics, especially type 2 diabetics, as it may progress the condition faster.
If you’re not allergic to bee products, and you aren’t diabetic, it should be safe for you to eat honey. However, we urge you to consult your medical practitioner before adding it to your diet.
