According to Ayurveda, every food items contains varying proportions of six rasas (tastes)- one of them being the sweet taste (Madhura Rasa). Foods with this taste build all the seven dhatus (tissues), strengthen the body and promote the production of ojas (immunity). While the sweet taste is important for everyone, children, senior citizens, and pregnant or nursing women need it most.

An awesome way to incorporate the sweet taste is with this fruit compote

Ingredients

  • Seasonal fresh fruits like apples, plums, pears, peaches, bananas and mangoes.
  • A pinch of elaichi (cardamom)
  • A pinch of powdered adrak (ginger)
  • A pinch of dalchini (cinnamon)
  • 2 laung (clove)

Method

  • Peel and cube the fruits. Use approximately 2 medium sized fruits such as apples, and two small sized fruits like peaches.
  • Put a saucepan on a medium flame and add the fruits and herbs to it along with a cup of water.
  • Allow it to simmer till the fruits turn tender.
  • Let it cool and serve on toast, buns, paranthas, or anything that you like.

Foods with madhura rasa pacify vata and pitta but increase the kapha in the body, leading to problems like lethargy, heaviness or obesity. It can also result in diseases like diabetes, arthritis, heart diseases, headaches and urinary tract problems. So, avoid have an excess of madhura rasa.
