Sexual diseases are often swept under the carpet because we are embarrassed to admit it. Unfortunately that is also the reason why very often these diseases turn into serious infections. STD stands for the word sexually transmitted disease and it is used specifically to describe diseases that are transmitted through sexual fluids. These diseases are transmitted from one infected person to the next.

Common sexually transmitted diseases

Both males and females are equally likely to be affected by sexually transmitted diseases. Here are some of the most common STDs.


This disease is caused by a bacteria known as Treponema pallidum. Patients suffering from this disease experience painful sores in the mouth or rectum. In advanced cases, this cause damage in the brain, heart, eyes or the nervous system.


This disease affects the moist and warm areas of the body and is caused by the bacterial Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The disease spreads fast across the body and affects the neck, vagina, urinary tract and anus.

Genital warts

This means genital infections or eruptions which are caused by the human papillomavirus and it is also the most common disease all around the world.


Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome is a disease which makes the person vulnerable to infections. As the disease progresses, the susceptibility increases significantly. In addition to these, here are a few more common STDs that you should be aware of:

  • Candida
  • Bacterial Vaginitis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Herpes

Symptoms of STDs

Instead of hiding your sexual diseases, you must focus on getting your disease treated by an expert at the earliest as soon as you observe these symptoms:

  • Odorous secretion from the vagina and itching
  • Sticky secretions from the penis and itching during urination
  • Pain or inflammation in and around the genitals
  • Warts around the genitals
  • Pain in the rectum
  • Excessive sweating, fatigue or excessive weight loss

How to prevent sexually transmitted diseases

STDs need to be treated according to their severity and complexity. The simplest way to prevent STDs is to avoid taking drugs and not having unprotected sex. If you visit a hair dresser make they use sterilized equipment only. Do not use any personal items like shaving kits or trimmers that do not belong to you.
