Acidity is a higher risk for those who have an imbalance in Pitta. An already aggravated Pitta can be further imbalanced by extra spicy and fried food causing further problems. The aggravated Pitta prevents agni (digestive fire) from digesting the food. This results in the build-up of ama (toxins). Therefore, you should also be mindful of foods that can calm aggravated Pitta and keep your agni in check.
Here’s a quick list of food you should stock up on to ease the symptoms associated with acidity.
Alkaline in nature, milk is the perfect food to soothe the irritated oesophagus and stomach lining. Rich in pitta pacifying properties, milk at room temperature reduces the build-up of acid, helps calm the acid reflux and neutralizes the excess acids present in the stomach. Warm milk should be avoided.
While fruits like lemon, orange and grapefruit cause acidity, alkaline fruits like banana, apples and pears have been shown to neutralize the acidity through pacifying the aggravated Pitta, hence providing relief.
Honey is an elixir for those who suffer from hyperacidity. It stops the overproduction of acid in the stomach and protects the stomach lining from its damaging effects, and calms those bouts of acidity. Drink a glass of lukewarm water with a spoon of honey and lemon juice every morning on an empty stomach.
While they may not sound tempting, boiled veggies are a treat for your flaming stomach. Not only do they assimilate easily, but they also need much less acid to be digested. So the next time you feel acidity flaring up, add a bowl of boiled veggies to your lunch.
Amla is very effective in neutralizing stomach acids. It is a Pittashamak and hence it regulates production of excess Pitta in the body. It also heals the inner lining of the stomach and oesophagus, which reduces the burning sensation and discomfort.
