Diabetes is a Kapha dosha in which the digestive Agni has been diminished leading to a tendency towards high blood sugar. Pranayama in Sanskrit is defined as the dissolution of breath into the body, which invigorates the internal organs by providing them oxygen. The main aim of performing pranayama or breathing exercise for diabetes is to provide optimum oxygen to the internal organs and promote health, vigour, and vitality of the body. Below is a list of some of the useful and beneficial pranayama for controlling diabetes.
This is one of the basic pranayamas and is the best for controlling diabetes and various other ailments like bronchitis, asthma, and lung congestion. Start by sitting on the floor with your legs folded and back straight. Look straight and press your right nostril with your thumb. Inhale through the left nostril and block the left nostril. Exhale through the right nostril and inhale with the right one again. Repeat this process for a few times. Practising Anulom-Vilom will help control diabetes in a natural way by improving oxygen in the blood and improve the functioning of glands and organs.
This is similar to Anulom-Vilom. Start by performing the same steps as in Anulom-Vilom and once you have inhaled, hold your breath in for a few seconds. Begin by 3, 5, or 7 seconds and stay relaxed throughout the session. The oxygen that stays in the lungs for longer than usual gets mixed with the blood and boosts cellular functions.
This is an abdominal exhalation exercise. Start by sitting upright and inhale while making sure not to move your shoulders or chest. Exhale completely by contracting the abdominal muscles strongly and swiftly by forcing the air out through the nostrils. Repeat for a few times. This results in dynamic purification of the blood and clears the nasal passages.
